VARIATION
Variation was my senior capstone project at Nicholls State University. I created an animated comic book which uses the popular genre of superhero comics in a non-traditional, immersive way.
At first, the work appears as a traditional printed comic book; but with AR, viewers can see how the story changes as the animated characters interact in the three-dimensional environment outside of the book. I created the 2d, frame by frame animations in Toon Boom Harmony, using textured bitmap brushes to emphasize the naturalistic, hand-drawn style and gestural movements. Using the programs MindAR and A-frame, the animations and new comic book story were overlayed on top of each printed page with image tracking. To express the change in the story, I created the overlay pages with a different art style, using a black and white color palette and focusing on negative space. The black and white pages create a contrast with the animated characters, which keep their vibrant color palette from the printed book.
